I have only been in New York for one week, but I am already starting to find my way around. Yesterday, when I got off the train at Union Square to go work I realized there was a farmers market right there! I guess I wasn't paying attention before because apparently it's there everyday in the summer. I had planned to get to work early so I already had an hour to spare and decided to explore the Union Square Greenmarket.
In Richmond, we have farmers markets, but they are no where near as convenient, affordable or large as this one. The Greenmarket was just outstanding! I am so lucky to work so close to the market. There was so much variety and the fresh produce looked amazing. I could spend hours wandering around and talking to the vendors.
All of the produce was so affordable, which was the biggest shocker to me. In Richmond, our famers markets are mostly on the outskirts of the city and had odd schedules, making it really difficult to find time to check one out. The produce is usually more expensive too because the vendors and small, local farmers and have to raise their prices to cover their costs. At the Greenmarket, the produce was much cheaper and in some cases, cheaper than Virginia grocery store prices! A pineapple is only 99 cents up here!
The Greenmarket had so much more than just produce. There were plants, from flowers and herbs to succulents! Everywhere! AND they were all cheaper than the plants in Virginia! I could buy anything for about the half price. I really wanted to purchase some peonies for my desk at work, but they were all out. I guess I will HAVE to go back because peonies are every girls necessity right? I did end up buying a succulent for my desk because I don't have a green thumb, but I'm pretty confident I can keep this succulent alive. Oh, and it was only $5! In Richmond, a succulent of this size would have been at least $12, so when I saw the price I couldn't turn away.
This is such a small part of the many areas I have already had the pleasure of exploring. I am missing my family and friends so incredibly much, but I am absolutely in love with New York. I want you all to feel close to me while I am so far away so I hope that you will check in and follow my NYC adventures. I'll be back home before you all know it. Stay tuned for more adventures of neighborhoods, markets and more!
